Carlo Muscat’s eighth album as a leader features a series of original compositions recorded in Kyiv under wartime conditions. With a Ukrainian ensemble, Muscat presents a repertoire largely centred on ballads, characterised by lyricism, space, and harmonic detail. Recorded amid air-raid sirens and power outages, the album reflects a focused, measured approach and a contemporary engagement with the ballad form.

"Muscat’s quartet is world class and could be mistaken for New York-area musicians.
Most of the music is taken at a slow ballad tempo but the results are never sleepy or overly laidback. The pieces are harmonically advanced with original chord changes and are excellent examples of modern jazz.
Muscat has an original tone and a passionate sound even as he takes his time to make his statements."

"What keeps the album’s calm from reading as escapism is the context Muscat won’t let listeners forget. This was the worst winter of the war so far — twenty-hour blackouts followed by two hours of restored power, on a three-month cycle. The whole session ran on generator power. Then, near the end of the day, with the band nearly finished tracking the record’s last notes, the main grid came back on. Five o’clock, right as they were wrapping the session."
